Approaching Year’s End: Is It Wise to Skip to Yakuza: Like a Dragon for Abundant Wealth?

I ordered a copy of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth in 2024, even though I hadn’t completed a Yakuza game. I had hoped to dedicate the year to playing through the Yakuza series and then to celebrate by playing Infinite Wealth, which is considered the best game in the series according to Metacritic.

Unfortunately, it’s now September, and I haven’t played all the Yakuza games. I still want to play Infinite Wealth, the acclaimed 2024 game, and consider it for Game of the Year.

I have already played a variety of other games and believe that playing Infinite Wealth will help me to be better prepared to vote for TheGamer’s GOTY pick. However, I wonder if skipping straight to Infinite Wealth is a good move in the long-term.

I have had positive experiences in the past by not starting with the first installment in a series. For example, I watched the Twilight and The Hunger Games movies before reading the books and still enjoyed the books afterwards.

I also started Lost with a later season and then went back to fill in the gaps from the beginning. Additionally, I read Era 2 of the Mistborn series before Era 1, despite it being unconventional, and still had a great time with the books.

I am considering convincing myself that starting with Infinite Wealth wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, even if it may not be recommended by others. I could still go back and play the earlier Yakuza games and enjoy them with the knowledge of what comes next.

Right?
