The recent release of Concord, an MMORPG, has raised concerns about its player base. The open beta for Concord’s console launch likely divided the player base, but similar concerns exist for rival game Throne and Liberty.
The low player numbers during the free trial period raise doubts about the game’s potential to attract paying customers at its current $40 price point, a concern already anticipated after the first beta. The early player numbers for Throne and Liberty come as no surprise, given Amazon Games’ previous success with similar titles.
In 2021, the studio’s release of New World, an MMORPG, saw a peak concurrent player count of over 913,000, ranking it seventh in Steamcharts’ top concurrent player charts of all time. Similarly, Lost Ark, an MMORPG published by Amazon in 2019, peaked with over 1.3 million concurrent players, setting a new record in 2022 with the fourth-highest peak concurrent player count in Steam history.
Both Concord and Throne and Liberty, launching within a month of each other, will be closely watched to see if these early player numbers are indicative of their potential success.
