In Helldivers 2, participation is not mandatory but it is highly appealing. I was eager to take a break from the game, anticipating new enemies to arrive soon after the apparent eradication of the Automatons. However, my plans changed when the Automatons resurfaced after only a short period.
Despite the lack of obligation, I found myself rejoining the war effort to combat the returning threat. One of the notable aspects of Helldivers 2 is its forgiving nature as a live-service game. Missing out on participation does not result in significant losses, as the game ensures that players still receive rewards, such as medals and warbonds, even if they do not complete all the tasks.
Unlike many live-service games, Helldivers 2 does not employ fear of missing out (FOMO) tactics to drive player engagement. Instead, it fosters a sense of narrative-driven participation. The game’s evolving story, which is influenced by player actions, motivates me to stay involved and be part of the unfolding events.
The game’s lack of predatory practices contributes to the loyalty of its fan base, as players are not pressured to play daily to avoid missing out on exclusive content. Instead, the desire to return to Helldivers 2 is driven by the narrative rather than artificial scarcity, creating a more enjoyable gaming experience. Helldivers 2, the sequel to the third-person shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios, is set in the midst of a Galactic War, where players take on the mission of bringing Managed Democracy to various regions.
