Brandon Sanderson’s interconnected universe has reignited my passion for reading in a way that I haven’t experienced in a decade. As I’ve grown older, it’s been challenging to find something that captivates me as much as my childhood interests did. The purity of those early passions, free from thoughts of commercialization, is difficult to replicate as an adult.
I’ve recently become engrossed in the Cosmere, a universe created by Brandon Sanderson that encompasses popular series like The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn, as well as standalone novels such as Elantris and Warbreaker. Although each series takes place in its own world, they are connected by characters who can traverse between them. Despite being early in my exploration of the Cosmere, I’ve already devoted a significant amount of my free time to it.
I find myself immersed in the intricate details of the universe, reminiscent of the level of dedication I had in my college years. The interconnectedness of the Cosmere has drawn me in, despite my previous disillusionment with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike the MCU’s collaborative nature, the singular vision of Sanderson as the sole creator of the Cosmere sets it apart, allowing for a more coherent and higher-quality experience.
Sanderson’s open communication with his fans, evident in his weekly YouTube updates and his transparency about his projects, has further fueled my excitement for the upcoming releases. Even though delving into a series with nearly two dozen books would normally seem daunting, I am eager to immerse myself in this expansive universe. As a new interest kindles within me, I bid adieu to another, having just finished watching Succession with my wife.
This experience has reminded me of the joy of discovering a new passion, and I look forward to the journey ahead in the world of the Cosmere.
